Mexico is one of the easiest places in Latin America to buy crypto. The government doesn’t regulate or tax it, exchanges have direct banking integrations, and payment methods are straightforward. If you’re in Mexico, getting crypto is simple.
The Mexican Advantage
Unlike many countries, Mexico has no crypto regulations or taxes yet. You can buy, hold, and sell with zero government oversight or tax burden. This is unlikely to last, but right now it’s a huge advantage. Combined with easy banking integrations (SPEI), Mexico is one of the friendliest crypto markets in the region.
Payment methods are abundant: SPEI (instant bank transfer), OXXO (convenience store deposits), credit cards, and more. You have options, which is rare outside the US and Europe.
Using Binance in Mexico
Binance is widely used and straightforward in Mexico. Here’s how:
- Go to binance.com and create account
- Verify identity with passport or driver’s license (takes 5-15 minutes)
- Go to “Wallet” → “Fiat Deposit”
- Select “Mexican Peso” (MXN)
- Choose payment method (SPEI, credit card, or OXXO)
- Follow the prompts and deposit funds
- Buy Bitcoin, Ethereum, or any listed coin
SPEI method (recommended):
SPEI is Mexico’s instant bank transfer system. It’s fast (5-30 minutes), cheap (sometimes free), and direct. When you select SPEI on Binance:
- You’ll see bank transfer details
- Open your Mexican bank app (Santander, BBVA, Scotiabank, etc.)
- Transfer the amount to Binance’s SPEI account
- In 5-30 minutes, the pesos appear in your Binance account
- Buy crypto immediately
Credit card (faster but more expensive):
Binance accepts Visa and Mastercard from Mexican banks. Instant purchase, but 3-4% fees.
- Click “Credit/Debit Card”
- Enter card details
- Pay the fee and buy crypto immediately
- Funds appear in your Binance wallet right away
The convenience isn’t worth the 3-4% fee unless you’re desperate for immediate access. SPEI is better.
OXXO deposits (alternative for cash):
If you prefer not to use bank transfers, OXXO (7-Eleven equivalent) lets you deposit cash:
- On Binance, select “OXXO” as payment
- Binance generates a deposit code
- Go to any OXXO convenience store
- Pay cash and provide the code to the cashier
- Within 1-2 hours, pesos appear in your Binance account
- Buy crypto
OXXO is slower (1-2 hours vs 5 minutes for SPEI) but useful if you’re avoiding bank transfers for privacy.
Using Bitso (Mexican Exchange)
Bitso is Mexico’s biggest exchange, licensed and regulated. Many Mexicans prefer local platforms over Binance.
Setup:
- Go to bitso.com or download the app
- Create account with email
- Verify identity with INE (national ID), RFC (tax ID), or passport
- Verify address (utility bill or bank statement)
- Link Mexican bank account
- Deposit MXN via SPEI
- Buy Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, or other supported coins
Payment on Bitso:
Bitso’s primary method is SPEI. After linking your bank:
- Click “Depósita pesos”
- Select amount and your bank
- Your bank app opens (through Bitso’s integration)
- Confirm transfer
- Money appears in Bitso instantly
- Buy crypto
Bitso also offers credit card purchases (3.5% fee) and Bitcoin ATM deposits if you’re in a major city (Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey). But SPEI is the most user-friendly.
Why use Bitso over Binance?: Bitso is locally regulated, has better customer support in Spanish, and some prefer supporting Mexican businesses. The experience is nearly identical to Binance for basic trading.
Payment Methods Explained
SPEI (Sistema de Pagos Electrónicos Interbancarios): Mexico’s instant bank transfer system. Available on most exchanges. Takes 5-30 minutes. Zero fees or very low fees. Use this.
OXXO: Cash deposits at convenience stores. Takes 1-2 hours. Useful for privacy. Limit is usually 20,000-50,000 MXN per transaction.
Credit card: Visa/Mastercard from Mexican banks. Instant but 2-4% fees. Only use for small emergency purchases.
Crypto ATMs: Major Mexican cities have Bitcoin ATMs. Buy crypto with cash immediately. 5-10% markup included in the rate. Use as last resort.
Bitcoin brokers: Private dealers who exchange cash for Bitcoin. Available in major cities. Rate is 5-10% above market. Slow and risky, avoid unless desperate.
Transferring Crypto to Your Wallet
Once you own Bitcoin or Ethereum, move it to a personal wallet (MetaMask, hardware wallet, etc.) for maximum security:
- On Binance or Bitso, click “Withdraw”
- Select the coin (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.)
- Paste your wallet address
- Confirm withdrawal
- Blockchain processes the transaction (10 minutes to a few hours)
Network fees apply: Bitcoin (~0.001 BTC = $40-50), Ethereum (0.01 ETH = $20-40), stablecoins like USDT ($1-2).
Cashing Out
To convert crypto back to Mexican pesos:
- Transfer crypto back to Binance/Bitso
- Sell for MXN in the exchange
- Click “Withdraw” and select your Mexican bank
- Transfer pesos to your account (24-48 hours)
- Pesos arrive in your bank account
Bitso and Binance are reliable for withdrawals. No scams or delays are common.
Avoiding Scams
Local crypto scams exist but are less prevalent than in other countries. Still, be careful:
- Never buy from random people: Some scammers pose as “crypto brokers” in Facebook groups. Stick to major exchanges.
- Verify website URLs: Phishing sites impersonate Binance/Bitso. Always type the URL directly, never click suspicious links.
- No unsolicited offers: If someone DMs you about guaranteed crypto returns or investment schemes, it’s a scam.
- Avoid unregistered exchanges: Bitso, Binance, and a few others are trusted. Unknown platforms are risky.
Tax and Legal Notes
Mexico doesn’t currently tax crypto, but this could change. The government is watching. If you’re making serious profits, consult a tax advisor about future compliance. Keep records of your trades just in case.
Risk Disclaimer: While Mexico has no current crypto taxes, regulations could arrive quickly. Use trusted exchanges (Binance, Bitso) and verified payment methods. SPEI and credit cards are safe; peer-to-peer deals are risky. Only trade with money you can afford to lose. Crypto is volatile and you could lose your entire investment.
Mexico’s crypto ecosystem is mature and accessible. SPEI makes deposits fast and cheap. Binance and Bitso are both legitimate. You have multiple payment options and no regulatory hurdles. Use this advantage while it lasts.
