Thailand is one of Asia’s most crypto-friendly countries. The government regulates crypto through the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), making it safer than many regional markets. If you’re in Thailand, you have straightforward ways to buy crypto legally.
The Regulatory Environment
Thailand passed its Cryptocurrency Business Act in 2018, making it one of the first Asian countries to formally regulate digital assets. The SEC licenses and oversees crypto exchanges, which means:
- Exchanges must meet security and operational standards
- Consumer protection exists if an exchange collapses
- Tax implications are clear
- Buying crypto is completely legal
This regulatory framework makes Thailand one of the best places in Southeast Asia to trade crypto. You don’t have the banking restriction hassles of Nigeria, Vietnam’s legal gray zone, or Indonesia’s volatility. You just buy and trade normally.
Using Bitkub (The Local Option)
Bitkub is Thailand’s largest and most popular exchange, fully licensed by the Thai SEC. It’s the easiest entry point for Thai residents.
Setup:
- Go to bitkub.com or download the mobile app
- Create account with email/phone number
- Verify identity with Thai national ID (Thai citizens) or passport (foreigners). Takes 5-30 minutes.
- Verify your bank account by transferring a small amount (10-100 Baht). Bitkub sends you a code to confirm ownership.
- Link your PromptPay number (instant payment system)
- Deposit Thai Baht and buy crypto
Payment methods on Bitkub:
- PromptPay: Instant transfer, recommended. Link your phone number and bank account.
- Bank transfer: 1-24 hour settlement depending on bank
- Credit/debit card: Instant but higher fees (2-3%)
- 7-Eleven kiosk (Bill Payment): Deposit cash and it credits to your Bitkub wallet
PromptPay is fastest. Your money appears in Bitkub almost instantly. Then you can buy Bitcoin, Ethereum, or any listed altcoin.
Fees: Bitkub charges about 0.15% per trade, which is reasonable. Withdrawal to wallet costs 0.001-0.0005 BTC depending on network.
Using Binance (International Option)
Binance still operates in Thailand but without licensing. You can access Binance, but it’s technically unregulated. Many Thais prefer licensed local exchanges, but Binance has better altcoin selection.
If you use Binance:
- Create account at binance.com
- Verify identity
- Add Thai bank account or PromptPay
- Deposit Thai Baht
- Trade
Binance’s P2P market also works for Thai Baht if you want to avoid the banking system entirely.
Caution: Binance is less regulated than Bitkub. The government has been tightening oversight. Use Bitkub as your primary exchange and Binance as a secondary.
Alternative Licensed Exchanges
Huobi Thailand: Huobi is a major exchange with a Thai subsidiary licensed by the SEC. Similar to Bitkub but with a different coin selection and user interface.
- Go to huobi.co.th
- Verify identity and add bank account
- Deposit Thai Baht via bank transfer
- Buy crypto
Huobi has strong altcoin options and good customer support. If Bitkub is down or you want more coins, use Huobi.
Satang Pro: Another SEC-licensed exchange. Smaller than Bitkub and Huobi but safe and regulated.
- Go to satangcorp.com
- Verify and link bank account
- Deposit Baht
- Trade
Satang has lower trading fees (0.1%) than Bitkub (0.15%) but less liquidity and fewer coins. Use if you’re comparing options.
Using PromptPay (The Thai Way)
PromptPay is Thailand’s instant payment system. It’s the fastest way to move money between your bank and a crypto exchange.
To set up PromptPay:
- Open your bank’s mobile app (Kasikornbank, Bangkok Bank, Siam Commercial Bank, etc.)
- Register for PromptPay using your phone number or national ID
- Link your bank account
- You now have a PromptPay ID (your phone number or ID number)
When buying crypto:
- On Bitkub or another exchange, select “PromptPay” as payment method
- It generates a QR code
- Open your bank app, scan the QR code, confirm transfer
- Money appears in your exchange account instantly
- Buy crypto immediately
PromptPay is seamless and fast. It’s the preferred method for Thai crypto traders.
Transferring Crypto Between Wallets
Once you buy Bitcoin or Ethereum, you’ll probably want to move it to a personal wallet (MetaMask, hardware wallet, etc.) for safety.
- On Bitkub or Binance, go to “Withdraw”
- Select the coin (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.)
- Paste your wallet address
- Confirm withdrawal
- The exchange broadcasts the transaction to the blockchain
- Your wallet receives the crypto in 10 minutes to a few hours
You’ll pay a network fee (withdrawal fee). Bitcoin withdrawals cost about 0.001 BTC ($40-50 depending on market). Ethereum costs about 0.01 ETH ($20-40). Smaller amounts like USDT or MATIC cost under $1.
Cashing Out (Crypto Back to Baht)
To convert back to Thai Baht:
- Transfer your crypto back to Bitkub or Binance (reverse withdrawal)
- Sell crypto for Thai Baht on the exchange
- Click “Withdraw” and transfer Baht to your bank account
- Money arrives in your bank within 24 hours
Bitkub and licensed exchanges are reliable for withdrawals. No scams or delays like some other countries experience.
Tax Considerations
Thailand taxes crypto gains, but the system is still developing. Currently:
- Capital gains: If you trade frequently (more than once per month), you’re considered a trader and must pay 15% corporate tax or 20% personal income tax depending on structure
- Holding: If you buy and hold without trading, capital gains tax (0.1% per transaction) applies when you sell
- Income tax: Mining, staking, or airdrops count as income and are taxed at standard rates
Keep records of all trades and be compliant. Thailand is moving toward stricter crypto taxation, so assume rules will get tighter.
Risk Disclaimer: Thailand has regulatory oversight, making it safer than unregulated markets. However, crypto is volatile and you can still lose money. Use licensed exchanges (Bitkub, Huobi, Satang). Never trade on unverified platforms. Understand tax obligations before trading. Only use money you can afford to lose.
Thailand’s crypto market is mature and well-regulated. Bitkub is straightforward, PromptPay is fast, and licensed exchanges offer consumer protection. If you’re in Thailand, you have one of the safest regional crypto environments. Use it to your advantage.
