How to Set Up and Use MetaMask in 2026

Install MetaMask, add networks, send/receive crypto, and connect to DeFi apps. Complete 2026 setup guide.

MetaMask is the most popular way to interact with decentralized apps and blockchains beyond Bitcoin. Whether you’re trading on Uniswap, lending on Aave, or buying NFTs, MetaMask is your gateway. But if you’ve never set it up, the interface can feel overwhelming. Let’s walk through it step-by-step.

Installing MetaMask

Start here: go to metamask.io (bookmark this—never click a link from Google to install MetaMask). You’ll see options for different browsers.

For Chrome, Firefox, or Edge: Click “Install MetaMask” and follow the browser extension prompts. The app will appear as a small fox icon in your toolbar.

For Safari or Mobile: Use the mobile app instead. Search for “MetaMask” in the App Store or Google Play.

Once installed, open MetaMask. You’ll see two options: “Create a New Wallet” or “Import Wallet.” If you’re starting fresh, click “Create a New Wallet.” If you already have seed words from another wallet (Coinbase Wallet, Trust Wallet, etc.), click “Import Wallet” and enter those recovery words.

Creating Your Wallet

Click “Create a New Wallet” and set a password. This password protects MetaMask on your computer—it’s not your seed phrase, and you can change it later.

Next, MetaMask shows you 12 seed words. Write them down on paper. In order. No exceptions. If someone gets these words, they own everything in your wallet. Store that paper somewhere safe—not your desk, not a photo on your phone, not a note in your computer. A safe deposit box is ideal. If you can’t do that, at minimum put it in a secure physical location only you know about.

After you write down the words, MetaMask will ask you to confirm them by clicking them in the right order. Do this carefully.

Setting Up Your First Network

By default, MetaMask connects to Ethereum mainnet. That’s fine for most purposes. But crypto operates on multiple blockchains—Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism, Binance Smart Chain, and dozens more.

To add a new network:

  1. Click the network dropdown at the top of MetaMask (it usually says “Ethereum Mainnet”)
  2. Click “Add Network”
  3. Enter the network details. For Polygon, for example:

You can find these details on chainlist.org. Search for the network you want, click it, and MetaMask will auto-fill everything.

Sending and Receiving Crypto

To receive: Click “Receive” in MetaMask. Your wallet address appears (a long string starting with 0x). Copy it and share it with whoever is sending you money. They’ll paste this into their wallet to send you funds. This is safe to share—an address is like your bank account number.

To send: Click “Send,” paste the recipient’s address, enter the amount, and click “Next.” MetaMask shows you the gas fee (the cost to process the transaction on the blockchain). This fee varies based on network congestion. On Ethereum mainnet, fees can be $10-50. On Polygon, they’re under $1. Choose your network wisely.

Review everything carefully. Once you click “Confirm,” the transaction is permanent. You can’t get it back if you made a mistake.

Connecting to DeFi Apps

This is where MetaMask shines. When you visit a DeFi app like Uniswap or Aave, you’ll see a “Connect Wallet” button. Click it, select MetaMask, and approve the connection.

MetaMask will ask you to confirm connecting your wallet to the app. This does NOT give the app access to your funds—it only lets the app see your address and wallet balances. When you actually make a transaction (swap tokens, lend money), MetaMask pops up asking you to confirm and sign it. You control everything.

Always check what you’re signing. If you’re swapping 1 ETH for USDC, the confirmation should show exactly that. If it shows something weird, click “Reject” and investigate.

Gas Fees and Network Selection

Gas fees confuse everyone at first. Here’s the pattern: Ethereum mainnet has high fees ($5-50). Polygon, Arbitrum, and Optimism have low fees (usually under $1). Binance Smart Chain is in the middle.

Where should you do your trading? Start on Binance to buy your initial tokens with fiat. Then transfer small amounts to MetaMask on cheaper networks (Polygon or Arbitrum) to experiment with DeFi. Once you’re confident, scale up.

Don’t move all your money to Ethereum mainnet unless you’re executing high-value trades. The gas fees will eat you alive.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Don’t store large amounts in MetaMask long-term. It’s a hot wallet—your keys live on your computer, which is connected to the internet. For serious holdings, move them to a hardware wallet and import that hardware wallet into MetaMask (advanced users only).

Don’t approve unlimited spending. Some DeFi apps ask for unlimited approval to spend your tokens. This is a security risk. If you’re approving USDC spending on Uniswap, set the approval limit to the amount you’re actually swapping.

Don’t click links to MetaMask. If someone sends you a link to “verify your wallet,” it’s a scam. Always navigate directly to the websites you trust.

Risk Disclaimer: MetaMask is convenient but vulnerable to hacks, phishing, and user error. Never paste your seed phrase anywhere. Never approve transactions you don’t understand. Keep large amounts in hardware wallets instead.

MetaMask makes DeFi accessible. It’s not perfect, but for most people, it’s the right tool to start exploring beyond traditional exchanges. Set it up, practice with small amounts, and upgrade to a hardware wallet once you’re holding serious money.

FAQ

Is MetaMask safe?

MetaMask is a reputable wallet, but it's a hot wallet (your keys live on your computer). For large amounts, use a hardware wallet.

What's the difference between importing and creating a wallet?

Creating generates new seed words. Importing lets you access an existing wallet using recovery words from another wallet.

Can I use MetaMask on mobile?

Yes, MetaMask is available as a mobile app for iPhone and Android. Keep the desktop and mobile versions synced using your same seed phrase.
