Bitcoin’s Historical Prices Over the Past Ten Years

Bitcoin price line chart 2010‑2021 X‑axis years Y‑axis USD

Bitcoin Historical Price Chart (2010‑2021)

2010‑2011: Genesis Block to the First Exchange

Bitcoin was created by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2009. The first real‑world transaction occurred on May 22 2010 (10,000 BTC for two pizzas), marking the market’s embryonic stage. In July, the first exchange Mt. Gox launched, pricing Bitcoin at roughly $0.05; the price then rose steadily to $0.39 between July and November.

2012‑2013: First Major Surge

In 2012, Bitcoin traded between $2 – $13. At the start of 2013, the price began a rapid climb, reaching $266 on April 10 (a more‑than‑20‑fold increase) and sparking widespread media attention. On May 14, Mt. Gox’s daily trading volume surpassed $100 million. However, by year‑end, the People’s Bank of China issued its first Bitcoin warning, labeling it an “illegal trading activity.”

2014‑2015: Price Correction

Early 2014 saw Bitcoin dip below $800. In October, the bankruptcy of Mt. Gox pushed the price further down to under $200. Throughout 2015, despite multiple fluctuations, the market showed a modest upward trend, staying within the $200‑$300 range.

2016‑2017: Second Bull Run

Bitcoin experienced rapid growth in 2016‑2017. In 2017, the price surged from around $1,000 to a peak near $20,000, an approximate 20‑fold increase. A sharp correction in December erased more than 80 % of the gains, and the price continued to fall, reaching below $3,500 by early 2019.

2018‑2022: Volatile Landscape

After 2018, Bitcoin entered a period of range‑bound trading. At the end of 2019 it briefly broke $10,000 before retreating. In March 2020, amid the COVID‑19 pandemic, the price fell below $3,800. Early 2021 saw another rally, topping $60,000, but a series of macro‑economic and regulatory factors triggered a pullback, leaving the market in a volatile band through 2022.
